are ya'all in?
Dear Captains,
When the OKC was first born, we knew we wanted to redefine Kickball in the Northwest and over the past two seasons, we've definitely held true to that mission. We've listened to the input of our community members and have tried out new rules, new fields, new equipment and it's all been an absolute blast.
One aspect of the Club that we've struggled to get going was giving back to the Community that allows us to have our fun week in and week out. We've bounced ideas around for a long time and sure enough, a solid idea has found it's way to us from one of our most beloved Community Members... Tony Lusk.
Hopefully you had a chance to read the article Tony posted on the chat about the kickball he's been playing in
In forming the OKC we also said that our Community would dictate how our Club's dues were spent. We'd like to hop on their bandwagon and we are proposing that this year's OKC Tourney Champions will not only raise ERNIE triumphantly and sport their Champs jerseys, but they will also choose a Charity to receive a $500 donation in their team's name.
Please keep in mind that we are aware that the OKC underwent some major changes in 2007, some changes were well received, and others weren't. If your team feels that we should wait to enact this charitable contribution or administer it in a different way (Fundraisers, etc.), you have the right to vote in that way.
This email is asking your team to vote:
A) Yay. The OKC will donate $500 of our EOSP budget for a donation to the Charity of the Champions' Choice
B) Nay. The OKC will not donate anything and keep the $500 for the EOSP
We are asking you to please reply no later than Friday, October 19th with your team's decision.

It sure seems like any charitable contribution should represent the league as a whole, not just one champion team. A donation to say, some Portland Parks and Rec/Schools sports program, or to some under funded organization that shares the same park space, or something like that...anyway, just a thought.
It's just that I don't trust many "charities" out there, especially after some of the creative financing organizations created after Katrina. Besides, if some charity based in NY gets $500, whether its for a legitimate cause or not, what does that say about our "community"? Leave the decision up to the board of directors.

I'd say yay to donating money to a charity organization. However, I am also inclined to agree with Ryan as far as making sure it is a legitimate one.
I'm also curious to find out what this means for us as a community. An increase of registration fees? Where does this money come from?
I agree, local charity that is well-researched and supports the parks and sports programs.
well giving money to charity versus NOT giving money to charity...I think it's a no brainer. BIG YAY. It definitely should be a league-wide decision on what charity. maybe the champs get to choose maybe 3 charities and then we vote on one? or the other way around where ppl in the league can suggest charities and the champs get to choose one. and there definitely should be guidelines:
1) support portland community
2) make sure it's a legitimate charity (like my empty pockets...)
there probably should be more guidelines.
we could take this charity stuff a step forward and do volunteer work as a league. oh yeah. time is money baby.
